Something else always comes along to claim your loyalty. The concept means almost nothing. Other words do a way better job at describing our relationships.
You know you can trust someone when you both stand to benefit. Nobody’s going to screw you if it means screwing themselves.
More like long term mutual interest with benefits. We like having sex with each other, and in addition to that we trust each other’s judgment.
There’s something about this article that strikes me as overly rational. I tend to agree, I see my past relationships and some partners desire for loyalty as feeling misguided. I also see myself as very loyal, I’ll drive 2 hours in the middle of the night to you if you need it, not because I stand to benefit but because it’s the right thing to do. Though, I do see it as something I benefit from in a cosmic/karmic kind of way.
